Aripanas are a form of ritual floor patterning practiced by women in Madhubani, Bihar. Like similar womens’ art forms in India, Aripanas are created afresh everyday, with specially elaborate ones reserved for ceremonial occasions. Painted on the ground with a finger dipped in rice flour paste, they are ephemeral, enjoyed as long as they last. In a first ever creative exploration of this ancient form, Italian artist Andrea Anastasio observes Sarla Devi – an Aripana expert – at work.
Struck by the flowing beauty of the experience, he re-presents the art: not as a documentation of the form so much but as an experimental visual poem around its essence. Drawing on process and movement, he invites the reader to be part of the creative journey.
